Shillong, Nov 18: The second day of the BCCI Cooch Behar Trophy, a multi-day tournament for U-19 men, witnessed only six overs of play between Meghalaya and Mizoram at the MCA Ground.
Persistent rain had caused a complete washout on Friday, but the players were greeted by clear and sunny skies on the following morning.
Despite the favorable weather, the outfield took an extended period to dry, hampering the ground staff’s best efforts. The situation worsened when overcast conditions emerged in the afternoon. The young cricketers eagerly awaited the commencement of play, and a wave of excitement swept through when the umpires finally declared that the action could begin.
Opting to field first after winning the toss, the hosts sought assistance for their pace bowlers from the cloudy skies and brisk wind. Angkit Tamang delivered three maiden overs from the tennis court end, while Banialam Mylliemngap (1/4) claimed the only wicket to fall. Mizoram’s Marcus, scoring 2, was caught behind by wicketkeeper Dipankar Barua.
The day concluded with only six overs played, and Mizoram reached a score of 4/1. Despite losing an early wicket, they could find solace in not suffering more setbacks under challenging batting conditions. With two days remaining and favorable weather predictions, both teams maintain strong hopes of securing victory.
Earlier in the day, the Meghalaya Cricket Association took the opportunity to honor the match officials and the support staff of the visiting Mizoram team.
The limited play on the second day showcased glimpses of skillful bowling and resilience under tricky conditions. Mizoram, finishing at 4/1, can take comfort in their cautious approach despite the early setback. With good weather anticipated in the coming days, the potential for an exciting and closely contested match looms large. As the tournament progresses, cricket enthusiasts eagerly await a more substantial display of talent from both sides.
