Annual rituals at Iewduh for prosperous trade

SHILLONG, Nov 21: The Raid of Mylliem on Wednesday performed the annual rituals at Iewduh, the oldest Khasi traditional market, in the presence of Syiem of Hima Mylliem, Ainam Manik Syiem.
The annual rituals were performed to pay homage to U Lei Shillong and to seek blessings for prosperous and peaceful trade.
The Myntri of Raid Mylliem, S Kharkongor, sacrificed a goat, hen and pig at Iewduh Khliehduh. Ceremonies were also performed at Basa Tympew (betel leaf market) where another hen was sacrificed.
After the end of the rituals, dancers accompanied by drums and flutes led the parade back to Khlieh Iewduh, where the ‘Shad Lehniam Iewduh’ ritual was performed.
Speaking to media persons, the Myntri of Raid Mylliem explained that the purpose of these ceremonies was to pray to the Almighty to shower his blessings on the market and the people working there.
