Nihangs open fire killing home guard

Sultanpur Lodhi (Kapurthala), Nov 23: A home guard jawan was killed while four policemen suffered injuries when a group of Nihangs resorted to “unprovoked” firing at them in Punjab’s Kapurthala early Thursday, officials said. Five people were arrested in the incident, they said. According to police, there was a dispute between two factions of Nihangs over the possession of Gurdwara Akal Bunga Sahib here. The incident took place when policemen tried to get the gurdwara vacated from a faction of Nihangs led by Baba Mann Singh. Special Director General of Police Arpit Shukla said there was an “unprovoked” firing at the policemen after they reached here on Thursday morning. Speaking to reporters in Kapurthala, Shukla said a murder case has been registered. “Five people have been arrested and weapons recovered,” said Shukla, adding that further investigation was underway. While policemen were standing on the road, some Nihangs opened fire at them, Kapurthala Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Tejbir Singh Hundal told PTI. (PTI)

Major conspiracy hatched in Rajouri: J-K BJP

Rajouri, Nov 23: Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief Ravinder Raina on Thursday reached the Bajimaal area in Rajouri where five army personnel were killed in an encounter with terrorists and said a major conspiracy was hatched from across the border to attack the security forces. He interacted with the locals and enquired about the security forces’ cordon-and-search operation. “A major conspiracy has been hatched again in Rajouri. As per reports, a group of terrorists infiltrated from across the border and took shelter in the dense forest areas. As the security forces began the operation, they came under intense firing in which some officers and jawans achieved martyrdom,” Raina told reporters at the site. He condemned Pakistan’s action of carrying out an “ambush” through its terrorists on the Indian Army personnel in the area. “We condemn it. Some of our army personnel achieved martyrdom in an ambush laid by the terrorists,” Raina said. Raina also encouraged the local people to support the initiative of the armed forces and the government to eliminate terrorism and its infrastructure in the region. (PTI)
