Shillong, Nov 26: In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Badonkupar Synnah emerged victorious in the light welterweight 60-63.5kg category, bringing immense joy to the home crowd on the second day of the 7th Elite Men’s National Boxing Championship.
The SAI Indoor Hall witnessed intense bouts as Synnah faced off against Roopesh Shukla of Madhya Pradesh, ultimately securing a win on points. This historic triumph not only marked Synnah’s success but also made him the first Meghalaya boxer to advance to the next round in this prestigious championship.
Organized by the Meghalaya Boxing Association in collaboration with the Boxing Federation of India and sponsored by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, the championship is set to conclude on December 1. The event has brought together boxers from across the nation, each vying for a coveted spot in the next rounds and inching closer to the goal of clinching a medal.
The second day of the championship featured a total of 78 bouts, showcasing the exceptional talent and fierce competition among the participating athletes. Spectators filled the venue, passionately cheering for their favorite boxers as they fought for glory in the ring.
Among the stellar Indian pugilists in action was Sachin of Services, a gold medalist at the South Asian Games, competing in the 54-57kg featherweight category. Sachin faced off against Vishal Kumar of Punjab and dominated the bout, securing a victory on points. His impressive performance added to the excitement of the day and showcased the high level of competition in the championship.
Another highlight bout featured Ashish Kumar, the 2019 Asian Championship silver medalist from Himachal Pradesh, in a fierce contest against Manipur’s Kingson in the featherweight category. The two boxers engaged in a battle of hard-hitting punches across three intense rounds, with Kumar ultimately winning the bout on a split decision. The match highlighted the tenacity and skill of the competitors, leaving the audience on the edge of their seats.
Despite the Badonkupar Synnah win, there were some setbacks for the local boxers on Sunday. Kordor Marwein, competing in the lightweight 57-60kg category, faced a tough challenge against Aditya Nagar of Uttar Pradesh. The referee intervened and stopped the fight in the first round as Nagar’s flurry of blows proved too much for Marwein to handle.
In the flyweight 48-51kg category, Khrawbok Marwein found himself up against Bihar’s Shiv Kant. Despite being knocked to the floor once, Marwein displayed resilience by getting back on his feet. However, the judges’ decision ultimately went against him, resulting in a points loss.
As the championship progresses, the excitement and anticipation continue to build, with boxers from various states showcasing their skill, determination, and passion for the sport.
