Shillong, Nov 26: Creating a historic moment at the 3rd edition of the Assam Rifles Hills Half Marathon in Laitkor, Shillong, three National Defence Academy (NDA) course-mates from the 67 NDA Course clinched the gold, silver, and bronze in the over 55-year age category.
Commander AP Venkatesh (NDA Alpha Squadron), a seasoned veteran from the Indian Navy, secured the gold, while Brigadier Sanjay Rawal (NDA Hunter Squadron), a veteran from the Indian Army, claimed the silver. Lt Gen PC Nair (NDA Hunter Squadron), the Director General of Assam Rifles, earned the bronze in this remarkable achievement.
The Assam Rifles Hills Half Marathon, held as part of the Fit India Movement by Assam Rifles, witnessed enthusiastic participation from numerous runners. The event showcased the enduring passion for long-distance running that brought the three course-mates together.
Commander Venkatesh, traveling from Bangalore, and Brigadier Sanjay Rawal, journeying from Delhi, displayed remarkable prowess despite the absence of hill running practice, leaving their competitors in the age category far behind.
Observers at the event noted that the motivation, zeal, and enthusiasm displayed by the three course-mates were a direct reflection of their NDA DNA.
Their inspiring feat likely resonated with officers and soldiers present at Laitkor, Shillong, emphasizing the mantra that age is no barrier when determination is unwavering.
Following the race, the camaraderie among the course-mates was evident as they congratulated and embraced each other, capturing the moment in numerous photographs.
The trio received cash prizes of Rs 12,000, Rs 11,000, and Rs 10,000, respectively.
The growing trend of running as a passion was evident in the event, with a notable participation of civilians. The oldest participant, a local lady aged 75, underscored the inclusive nature of the marathon.
The Assam Rifles Hill Half Marathon served as a precursor to the upcoming Coal India Half Marathon scheduled in Guwahati on December 3, 2023, organized by the Indian Army.
