SHILLONG, Nov 27: The enforcement wing of the KHADC on Monday conducted checking of trading and labour licences in Laitumkhrah area in the presence of Executive Member in-charge of Taxation, Fantin J Lakadong, who is also the local MDC, along with the Executive Member in-charge of Land, Teibor Pathaw.
The inspection revealed that many shops did not possess up-to-date papers insofar as Professional tax was concerned.
A few establishments were asked to close down until they could furnish up-to-date papers before the district council, especially pertaining to trading and labour licences.
Speaking to reporters after the inspection, the local MDC said that the Council has decided to conduct checking of trading licences in various parts of the city.
Talking about the inspection in Laitumkhrah area, Lakadong said around 80 per cent of non-tribal traders in Laitumkhrah area are running their businesses legally as they possess valid trading licences issued by the Council. He, however, said that many of these traders are unaware that they are required to pay the professional tax to the Council.
According to him, even the indigenous tribals who are working in the government sector and others must also pay the professional tax to the Council.
The MDC said that they are also checking the labour licences since there are chances that many people who have come to the state to work as labourers may not possess the licence.
