ISTANBUL, Nov 30: Hurt by goalkeeper Andre Onana’s mistakes, Manchester United twice wasted two-goal leads to draw 3-3 at Galatasaray in a febrile atmosphere Wednesday in the Champions League to leave its hopes of reaching the round of 16 hanging in the balance.
United was 2-0 ahead after 18 minutes after strikes by Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes and then 3-1 up following a goal by Scott McTominay in the 55th.
At fault for Galatasaray’s first goal by Hakim Ziyech at a free kick, Onana fumbled another set-piece attempt by the winger into his own net to bring the hosts back into it at 3-2 in what proved to be an end-to-end Champions League classic. Muhammed Kerem Akturkoglu then controlled a fine through-ball from Ziyech and powered a rising shot past Onana in the 71st to earn Galatasaray a point that kept the Turkish team a point ahead of United, which remained in last place. FC Copenhagen, which drew 0-0 at already qualified Bayern Munich later Wednesday, is ahead of Galatasaray on goal difference.
United must now beat Bayern and hope the Copenhagen-Galatasaray game played concurrently ends in a draw to advance in second place. Erik ten Hag’s team has dropped eight points from winning positions in the group and conceded 14 goals — already a club record in the competition.
ARSENAL ROUT LENS
Top of the Premier League and now a group winner with a game to spare in the Champions League.
Arsenal’s season could hardly be going any better.
The English team had six different scorers in a 6-0 rout of Lens on Wednesday that secured a place in the round of 16 of the Champions League.
Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard — Arsenal’s quintet of attacking players — scored at Emirates Stadium as Arsenal became the first English club to lead by five goals at halftime of a Champions League match.
MADRID BEAT NAPOLI
Rodrygo and Jude Bellingham scored a goal each as already qualified Real Madrid beat second-place Napoli 4-2 to win its Champions League group on Wednesday.
Joselu and teenager Nico Paz also found the net to give the record 14-time European champion its fifth straight win in Group C. The result frustrated Napoli’s bid to reach the knockout stage before the final round of matches. Bellingham has scored 15 goals in his first 16 matches with Madrid, including four goals in his four Champions League games with the Spanish club. Napoli is eight points behind Madrid and three points in front of Braga, which drew 1-1 at home against last-place Union Berlin in the other group match. Napoli will host Braga in the final round to try to secure its spot in the last 16.
INTER STAGE COMEBACK
Serie A leader Inter Milan came back from three goals down for a 3-3 draw at already eliminated Benfica in the Champions League on Wednesday, keeping last season’s finalist in contention to win its group.
Marko Arnautovic, Davide Frattesi and Alexis Sanchez (with a penalty) scored for Inter after João Mario’s first-half hat trick for the hosts.
Inter, which had already secured passage to the knockout round, remained second but level on points with Group D leader
Real Sociedad, which drew 0-0 with Salzburg. Real Sociedad tops the group with 11 points, followed by Inter (11), Salzburg (4) and Benfica (1).
PSV EDGE SEVILLA
United States international Ricardo Pepi came off the bench to help PSV Eindhoven rally from two goals down against Sevilla and advance to the knockout stage of the Champions League for the first time since 2015-16.
Pepi entered the match in the 83rd minute and scored the winner in stoppage time to give PSV a 3-2 victory over 10-man Sevilla on Wednesday.
The Dutch club secured qualification after Group B leader Arsenal routed third-place Lens 6-0 in London.
BAYERN HELD
Manuel Neuer made a late double save to preserve Bayern Munich’s record unbeaten run in the Champions League group stage with a 0-0 draw against Copenhagen on Wednesday.
Neuer denied Copenhagen forward Mohamed Elyounoussi in the 87th minute, then followed with another save to thwart Elyounoussi again from the rebound as Bayern stretched its group-stage unbeaten run to 39 games.
But the Bavarian powerhouse’s competition record 17-game winning streak in the group stage was ended by a Copenhagen team that kept its hopes of reaching the last 16 alive.
Bayern, already assured of topping Group A, had no need to force the initiative with only pride at stake.
SOCIEDAD 0-0 SALZBURG
Real Sociedad was held 0-0 at home by Salzburg in the Champions League on Wednesday but stayed top of Group D as Inter Milan also failed to win.
Salzburg goalkeeper Alexander Schlager’s saves denied Sociedad in a less lively game than Inter’s three-goal second-half rally for a 3-3 draw at last-place Benfica.
Sociedad and Inter both advanced to the round of 16 three weeks ago and will meet at San Siro on Dec. 12 in a match which will decide the group winner. (AP)
