5 homeless persons shot in Las Vegas, 1 dead
Las Vegas, Dec 2: At least five homeless people were shot at in Las Vegas, of which one was killed in the incident, police said. Local KTNV news channel said the incident was reported at 5.34 p.m. on Friday evening near Charleston and Honolulu Street, reports Xinhua news agency. A spokesperson from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) described the victims as “unhoused”, saying the attacker was still at large. LVMPD Lieutenant Jason Johansson told a press conference Friday night that officers were directed to a “homeless encampment” with multiple tents. There, multiple witnesses led police to an area where five people with gunshot wounds were found. Johansson said responding officers rendered immediate medical aid until all five victims could be transported to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, the largest public hospital in the state of Nevada. So far, one man in his 50s died at the hospital while three men in their 30s are being treated with two remaining in stable condition and another one in critical condition, said sources. (IANS)

 

Gohar Ali Khan becomes PTI chairman
Peshawar, Dec 2: Lawyer Gohar Ali Khan was on Saturday was elected unopposed as the new chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) after its intra-party elections were held earlier in the day. PTI chief Imran Khan had nominated Gohar Khan to succeed him as he was unable to contest polls due to his disqualification in the Toshakhana case, The News reported. Omar Ayub Khan was also chosen as the party’s central general secretary unopposed, party’s Chief Election Commissioner Niazullah Niazi said in Peshawar while announcing the results. He shared that Ali Amin Gandapur and Yasmin Rashid have been chosen as the party’s provincial presidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, respectively. The PTI intra-party elections were held in line with the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) orders to secure its election symbol “bat” for the general elections slated to take place in February next year. 7 suspected illegal miners dead in Zambia
Harare, Dec 2: Seven suspected illegal miners were confirmed dead and more than 20 others were missing and presumed dead after heavy rains caused landslides that buried them inside tunnels they had been digging at a copper mine in Zambia, police and the local authority said on Saturday. No bodies had yet been retrieved after the landslides late on Thursday night, police said. Many of the victims were believed to have drowned. The miners were digging for copper ore at the Seseli open-pit mine in the city of Chingola, around 400 kilometers north of the capital, Lusaka.The landslides happened some time between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Thursday, police said. Police gave names or partial names of seven confirmed victims and said all of the miners in the tunnels are “suspected to have died.” Police didn’t say how many miners in total there were in the tunnels but Chingola District Commissioner Raphael Chumupi told The Associated Press that there were at least 36.
