‘Divided by politicians,
united by alumuri’
The oh-so-legendary alumuri, the heart throb of both the Instagram generation and the wise old Elvis Presley souls, apparently traces its roots back to the migrants from the late 1900s, though nothing on document.
The non-tribal maestros have dominated the chana chat and alumuri scene in the city, but beyond the urban jungle, the locals have ventured into the art of selling these “exotic” non-local delights, almost breaking into the urban monopoly.
What is a tourist site without the mandatory Muri container with an ensemble of snacks, accompanied by the essential chana wala sporting the iconic green dabba?
In the grand scheme of things uniting people, Alu-muri takes center stage, in proving that origins and ancestry are mere trivial details when compared to the bonding power of a well-seasoned snack.
Who needs a history book when you’ve got this simple concoction reshaping the course of human connections, one bite at a time?

A door to the abyss! Shillong’s pay and use public toilets are very handy. Although not found in every nook and corner, an avid stroller will know where to find the few iconic ones that stand in the
city. However, this pay and use toilet near the golf course stood apart from the others as it brandished only a door, holed even, attached to a pole
next to the real facility. (ST)
