New Assembly building may be ready by Aug ’24

SHILLONG, Dec 5: After missing multiple deadlines, the government now plans to complete the construction of the new Assembly building at New Shillong Township by July or August of 2024.
Assembly Speaker, Thomas A Sangma conducted an inspection and chaired a review meeting on Tuesday regarding the construction of the Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang.
After the meeting, he reaffirmed his commitment to completing the project soon.
The Speaker said that a deadline has been set to complete the construction work by August, if not July of 2024. The intention is to hold the next autumn session of the Assembly at the new building, he added.
Sangma said officers of different departments were called for the meeting on Tuesday.
“The PHE Department will take care of the water supply in the complex. The Social Forestry Department is entrusted with the landscaping of the premises while the Arts and Culture Department’s responsibility is to give the building a traditional look,” he said.
“Opinions of all the departments concerned, including IT, were sought as we do not want the work to go slow,” he said.
The Speaker gave an update on the dome. The debris has been cleared and the structural layout work is in progress, he said.
He said the dome would be reconstructed using prefabricated steel structures expected to arrive by January 2024. The installation of these structures is likely to start in February and conclude by April.
The dome structure would be vetted by experts from IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee, he said.
The Speaker further said that the Ministry of the Development of North East Region has assured in principle to sanction the second phase of the project, the detailed report for which is being prepared. He hoped the second phase would be sanctioned within the current fiscal.
