Twelve vehicles torched in B’desh
Dhaka, Dec 7: At least 12 vehicles were set ablaze in Bangladesh in the last 24-hours allegedly by the country’s main opposition party BNP’s supporters. Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence Department said that among the 12 vehicles, six were burnt in Dhaka city, three in Chattogram, two in Gazipur, and one in Sirajganj. It said that the vehicles included six buses, two covered vans, one truck, and three pickup vans. “Twenty-one firefighting units were employed to douse the fires,” Fire Service and Civil Defence Department said. The miscreants also set a bus of ‘Taranga Paribahan’ on fire in Shahbagh area of Dhaka on Thursday afternoon. The incident took place in front of Aziz Super Market while another bus was also set on fire at Motijheel Egret circle, Duty Officer Rozina Akter at Fire Service and Civil Defence told IANS. Bangladesh is currently witnessing a blockade called by the opposition party BNP. (IANS)
Death toll in Karachi building fire rises to five
Karachi, Dec 7: The death toll in fire at a commercial-cum residential building has risen to five, local media reported. The fire broke out in the building named Arshi shopping Centre on Wednesday evening, Geo news reported. As per eye-witness, a shop caught fire during welding work which later spread to other shops in the building. Goods worth hundreds of thousands of rupees were gutted in the blaze. The fire department said the cooling process has been completed. The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has sealed the Arshi Shopping Centre. (IANS)
Gunman among 3 killed in shooting in Las Vegas
Las Vegas, Dec 7: At least three people, including the gunman, were killed in a shooting on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), local police said. The incident occurred near BEAM Hall on the campus of UNLV on Wednesday morning, Xinhua news agency reported. Addressing media persons, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) Sherif Kevin McMahill said: “There is no further threat on campus. No more threat to the community. The suspect is deceased. Right now, we know there are 3 victims, but unknown extent of the injuries. That number could change.” The injured were rushed to hospital, the police said. LVMPD did not disclose the conditions of the injured in the shooting. Investigation of the shooter’s motives is underway. (IANS)
Indonesia’s Ibu volcano erupts
Jakarta, Dec 7: The Ibu volcano on Halmahera Island in the eastern Indonesian province of North Maluku erupted on Thursday at around 11 a.m. local time for about 90 seconds, throwing ash up to 1,200 metre above its peak, according to the country’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG). “The ash column was observed to be gray in color with thick intensity towards the southeast,” said Efrita Saragih, an officer of the volcano’s monitoring post. Standing as high as around 1,300 metre above sea level, Ibu volcano is classified in the second danger level, below the highest level of IV. The volcano has erupted 60 times since the beginning of this year, PVMBG said. (IANS)
