SWKH govt hospital successfully conducts 1st major surgery

Mawkyrwat, Dec 8: Mawkyrwat Civil Hospital on Friday successfully conducted a first of its kind major surgery on a 72-year-old patient who has been living with pain for more than 50 years.
Jrimshon Shangdiar from Manad village, 25 kms from Mawkyrwat, was the first patient on whom the major surgery was conducted by a team of doctors of the hospital under the supervision of Medical Superintendent, Dr. W Sutnga.
Shangdiar told media persons that he was suffering from the painful wound that he incurred while meeting with an accident while he was playing with fire when he was a child.
Speaking about the surgery, Dr. Sutnga expressed happiness regarding the surgery. He thanked all the members of his team of doctors who were part of the operation.
Dr. Sutnga also said that the patient came to him for treatment long time back while he was working in Civil Hospital, Shillong.
He advised the patient to undergo a surgery and only that could cure his wound.
“Now that he had suffered so much, the patient had asked for the surgery himself, especially after we explained to him that it might lead to septicemia and can take his life also. Therefore, today we have successfully conducted a surgery which is a first major surgery that the hospital has conducted and we hope that soon he will recover,” the doctor said.
The doctor has also declared that Mawkyrwat Civil Hospital is now ready to conduct another major surgery. However, it urgently needs a blood storage unit.
Dr. Sutnga also said that there are many types of equipment that the hospital needs because even though the OT is ready, but the equipment are inadequate till date.
“For this operation also, I have requested senior doctors from Civil Hospital Shillong to lend us with the necessary equipment,” Dr. Sutnga said.
Asked about the challenges if the hospital has to conduct major surgery again, Dr. Sutnga said, “We have earmarked Rs 4 lakhs for buying of equipment. The government has provided us with an IPA fund of Rs 30 lakhs. If we perform diligently, the government will provide more funds through the MHIS. This way we will be able to procure all necessary equipment.”
The doctor also urged upon the people of South West Khasi Hills to trust in the doctors of Mawkyrwat Civil Hospital.
He also informed that he had already written to the government about all the equipment needed in different departments of the hospital including Anesthasia department, Orthopedic Deparment, Surgery Department, ENT Department, etc.
Meanwhile, during her visit to the hospital recently, Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has proudly certified that the hospital had become one of the model hospitals in the state and informed that within 10 months, it has successfully conducted 900 minor surgeries.
