SHILLONG, Dec 12: The NEHU Academic Council meeting scheduled for Wednesday is likely to discuss the inclusion of representatives of North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) as members of the Council.
NEHUSU finance secretary Mandor Diengdoh Swer, on Tuesday, said that they were given an assurance that this matter will be taken up in Wednesday’s Academic Council meeting.
“We have also written to the Vice Chancellor, Prabha Shankar Shukla, to take up this matter in the Academic Council,” he said.
According to him, the university on its own is selecting two students on merit to be members of the Council.
“It does not serve the purpose since they failed to raise issues affecting the students,” the NEHUSU member said.
He recalled that there was another assurance that they will discuss the demand for selection of students eligible for Educational Backward Areas (EBA) certificate to be based on the literacy rate up to the village level.
“At present, many deserving students are not eligible since the literacy rate is based at the block level. We cannot get the correct picture on the literacy rate of the villages if we base it on the figures at the block level,” Swer said.
Meanwhile, the NEHUSU finance secretary also expressed his disappointment that the issue of marking system is yet to be discussed in a committee formed by the NEHU Vice Chancellor
