SHILLONG, Dec 16: In what may be termed as good news for the people of Ri-Bhoi, three crucial health establishments will see the light of day by February-March next year, if all goes according to plan. The healthcare infrastructures in question are the Maternity and Child Hospital (MCH), Nongpoh, trauma centre at Nongpoh Civil Hospital and office of the District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO), Ri-Bhoi.
This was informed by Chairman of Meghalaya Health Advisory Board and Nongpoh MLA, Mayralborn Syiem on Saturday.
The demand for the MCH and making the trauma centre at Nongpoh Civil Hospital functional was long-pending, and Syiem had often raised it in and outside the Assembly.
“The MCH hospital, trauma centre and the office of the DM&HO, Ri-Bhoi will most likely be inaugurated by February-March 2024,” said Syiem, while stating that once ready, these facilities will be a blessing for the people of Ri-Bhoi, especially healthcare delivery to mother and child.
“All the cases of delivery will be shifted to new MCH hospital so that it will ease the pressure on Nongpoh Civil Hospital and other general diseases can be treated there,” Syiem said.
He added, “At the same time, when the new office of the DM&HO will be inaugurated, the temporary office will shift to their own building and the trauma centre will be made functional”.
Informing that few more Primary Health Centres (PHCs) will be coming up in the district, the Nongpoh MLA said, “The focus is on improving the health sector and skill development trying to hand hold youths through ITI and other skill development programmes
so that they do not just depend on government jobs”.
He added that emphasis is also laid on developing the tourism circuits of the district.
In May this year, Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh had conducted an inspection of the MCH, Umran Parila, and the General Nursing and Midwifery Institute at Pahamsyiem to review their progress and facilitate their completion.
