Wilmington (US), Dec 18: A car plowed into a parked SUV that was guarding President Joe Biden’s motorcade Sunday night while the president was leaving a visit to his campaign headquarters. The president and first lady Jill Biden were unharmed.
While Biden was walking from the campaign office to his waiting armored SUV, a sedan hit a US Secret Service vehicle that was being used to close off intersections near the headquarters for the president’s departure. The sedan then tried to continue into a closed-off intersection, before Secret Service personnel surrounded the vehicle with weapons drawn and instructed the driver to put his hands up.
Biden paused and looked over toward the sound, surprised, before he was ushered into the vehicle, where his wife was already seated, before being driven swiftly back to their home. His schedule was otherwise unaffected by the incident.
Steve Kopek, a US Secret Service spokesman, said the president’s motorcade departed without incident. Local Wilmington police were handling the crash, which means the driver was not considered a serious threat to the president.
“A silver copper sedan with Delaware plates hit what seemed to be a motorcade SUV shielding the motorcade at the intersection across from the entrance of the campaign headquarters,” the report said. “There was a loud bang and POTUS was standing outside the vehicle with a surprised expression on his face,” it said.
Agents quickly sprung into action, cornering the car and pulling weapons on the driver, who held his hands up, it added. The Bidens’ trip to the campaign headquarters marked the first time since staffers began working out of the Wilmington office over the summer.
US to suspend rail op
on southern border
due to migrant surge
The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced that it will temporarily suspend operations at the international railway crossing bridges in Eagle Pass and El Paso, Texas, from Monday due to the continued surge in migrant crossings.
In a statement on Sunday, the CBP said the suspension, which will come into force at 8 a.m. (local time) on Monday morning, is “in order to redirect personnel to assist the US Border Patrol with taking migrants into custody”. The agency further said that it is “continuing to surge all available resources to safely process migrants in response to increased levels of migrant encounters at the southwest border, fueled by smugglers peddling disinformation to prey on vulnerable individuals” (Agencies)
