Tura, Dec 21: The A’chik Organization for Social Welfare (AOSW) on Thursday alleged the presence of illegal teer counter operators running multiple counters with single licenses in East Garo Hills and has sought action from concerned authorities to clamp down on the irregularity.

The illegal activity allegedly came to light following an RTI filed by the organization with the District Taxation Office in Williamnagar. A complaint in this regard has also been dispatched by the organization to Commissioner of Taxes in Meghalaya, Ramakrishna Chitturi.

“According to the RTI reply, many operators with valid Teer Licenses, who are supposed to run only single counters, are operating multiple counters. This goes against the rules of the gaming Act and must be stopped,” the organization said.

The organization felt that the gaming act should have been fully enforced during issuance of licenses to operators to facilitate legal counters and encourage their business. According to the organization, the businesses of legal teer counters are badly being affected due to the presence of these illegal operators.

Pointing out that the activity is not only illegal but also results in loss of revenue to the Meghalaya Government, the organization urged the department to intervene and clamp down on such operators.
