Guwahati, Dec 22: Ahead of the festive season, 10 state-of-the-art traffic interceptor vehicles and 150 breath analysers were handed over to Assam Police in a significant move by the Lead Agency on Road Safety to encourage road safety measures and strengthen the enforcement in the state.

Assam transport minister Parimal Suklabaidya formally handed over the equipment to Assam director general of police, Gyanendra Pratap Singh during an official ceremony at the Assam Police headquarters in Ulubari here on Friday.

Senior officials from the state transport department and Assam Police were also present during the equipment handover ceremony.

Notably, the equipment will be distributed across Assam in the “most accident-prone” areas.

Sources said that the deployment of 10 traffic interceptor vehicles, equipped with advanced monitoring and enforcement tools, will help in enhancing surveillance and deter traffic violations, especially over-speeding, which is the prime cause of accidents and fatalities in Assam.

Besides, the initiative has also emphasised the collaborative efforts between the Lead Agency on Road Safety, under the state transport department, and the Assam Police to enhance road safety enforcement in the state.

The handover has come at a crucial time with the festive season approaching and with many places in the state experiencing challenging weather conditions this winter, particularly fog.

The DGP said that two traffic interceptor vehicles would be given to Nagaon and Golaghat districts exclusively for deployment near the Kaziranga National Park for curbing the menace of over-speeding in that segment.

“Breath analysers will enhance the enforcement efforts against drink and drive incidents in which Assam registers more cases than the national average. With the onset of the festive season, the initiative targets reducing incidents of over-speeding and drink and drive in the state, which is one of the significant contributors to accidents and fatalities,” an official said.
