SHILLONG, Dec 22: The Christmas spirit has embraced Shillong and various parts of the state, drawing a significant number of tourists.
Impressed by the festive atmosphere in the city, the state government is eager to transform the city into the Christmas capital of the Northeast.
This year, the government has taken an extra step, illuminating several important locations in Shillong, beyond the usual Police Bazar stretch, setting a festive tone throughout the city.
Expressing his delight over the Tourism and Arts and Culture department’s initiative, Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh mentioned that the government plans to intensify this idea. There are considerations to extend the illumination and decoration efforts to district headquarters next year.
In addition to Shillong, even Tura has received festive decorations.
Lyngdoh expressed satisfaction with the positive response, noting a significant increase in tourist influx. He affirmed that tourism projects would be further intensified in the coming year.
Beyond Shillong, the village of Moolamylliang in the Saipung Block of East Jaintia Hills has garnered attention for its exquisite lighting and decoration during the Christmas season. The village has become a renowned symbol of greenery and cleanliness in the district.
Moolamylliang organises the Annual Christmas Lights Festival every December, adorning the entire village with bright and beautiful lights of various shapes and colors to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
Lyngdoh also endorsed the idea of making Shillong the Christmas capital of the Northeast, considering the numerous churches in the city. He assured that the suggestion would be thoroughly examined and acted upon, by the state government.
