Cong dismisses threat from regional parties

SHILLONG, Dec 22: The Congress party has dismissed any challenge from the regional parties in the Lok Sabha polls due next year and asserted that voters of the state were intelligent enough to back national parties to represent them in the Parliament.
Opposition leader and Congress MLA, Ronnie V Lyngdoh on Friday claimed that a single member of a regional party won’t be able to make much of an impact in the Lok Sabha, unlike national parties.
In response to a question about how he saw the NPP and VPP challenging the Congress here, Lyngdoh stated that Meghalaya only has two Lok Sabha members and one Rajya Sabha member in the Parliament. He did not hesitate to add that the people in the state would much rather have national parties represent them in the House.
The Congress leader also played down the party’s recent losses in states like MP, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, claiming that the party’s share of the vote has increased in those states.
Additionally, he stated that the BJP, which has financial clout and even uses official resources for party publicity, was pitted against the Congress, which has few resources.
