SHILLONG, Dec 30: The KSU and the FKJGP urged the state government on Saturday to put the safety and security of the indigenous communities first, take care of urgent issues like unemployment and development, and to give up daydreaming about the construction of railways in Meghalaya.
The leaders of the two organisations made these remarks during the commemoration of the 161st anniversary of the legendary freedom fighter from Jaintia Hills, U Kiang Nangbah, here on Saturday.
The various organisational units assembled in front of Shillong Civil Hospital, the location of the Kiang Nangbah statue. When it was their turn to speak, the leaders emphasised the importance of staying true to the state’s heritage and it’s past.
“We want the government to first assure the safety and security of the indigenous communities, to improve education, improve the health sector, to uplift rural development, to improve the livelihood of the farmers, address the problem of unemployment, etc.,” KSU President Lambokstar Marngar said in his address to the crowd.
“The government should be held accountable if anything goes wrong in the future if it ignores these issues,” he continued.
“For how long will we allow the noose that was tied around U Kiang Nangbah’s neck to be further tightened around the neck of the Jaidbynriew?” questioned FKJGP leader, Kitboklang Nongphlang.
The FKJGP also asked the state government to pursue the resolutions on language and ILP before even discussing railways.
The pressure groups have been demanding a comprehensive mechanism to deal with influx like ILP and MRSSA before introducing railways in the state.
