Shillong, Jan 3:  The North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Wednesday has given the state government ten days deadline to release the scholarship of the students.

The leaders of the two organisations held a protest in-front of MBoSE office at Lower Lachumiere against government’s failures to release the scholarship.

Talking to reporters, HYC president, Roy Kupar Synrem said that they have learned that the fresh students and 50% of the renewal students are yet to get the scholarship.

He recalled that during the previous year, the Education department had released the scholarship overnight after the HYC had threatened to take out a rally.

Reminding that the scholarships would normally be released to the students in the October, Synrem recalled that Education Minister, Rakkam A Sangma in a statement to the Press on November 21 last had stated that the scholarships would be released to students in two to three weeks’ time.

“But till now the scholarship is yet to be released,” HYC president said.

He suggested that the state government can use the contingency funds to release the scholarship.

According to him, the fund can be refunded once the funds from the Centre is received by the state government.

Meanwhile, NEHUSU general secretary Banpynbiang Riang said that they have decided to give ten days’ time to release the scholarship of the students.

He said that they will again agitate if there is no response from the government within this deadline.
