BJP gears up for ‘RTI war’

SHILLONG, Jan 7: Walking the talk, the State BJP is all set to start its RTI war against the state government vis-à-vis the alleged shoddy implementation of central schemes, beginning Monday.
“Offices will properly function from next week, so we will take (it) up at various levels from next week,” said Tura MDC and State BJP vice president, Bernard N Marak.
The state BJP, which is an ally of ruling NPP in the MDA government, is preparing RTI applications to hold the state government accountable for poor execution of numerous central programmes.
The results will be shared with the Centre for appropriate action.
The BJP vice president said, “We are constantly in contact with the villagers even without RTI, concerned officers are looking after the schemes as requested by our members. Still we will file RTIs to get details of each and every central scheme”.
According to him, the party is already inspecting and studying the implementation of various central schemes including the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), and others.
“We are going to compare it and forward the report to the Centre seeking appropriate actions,” Marak said.
The State BJP has been harping on shoddy implementation of many central schemes in the state for years now, but there has been no action on the ground to counter that.
Despite the occasional tall claims of the saffron party to take the issue up with its central leaders, there have been no concrete words from the Centre except during the poll campaigns when a few leaders of the BJP top brass accused the state government of not implementing the central projects diligently.
Union Home Minister and a BJP top gun, Amit Shah, had termed Meghalaya as “one of the most corrupt states in the country,” while claiming to “finish corruption” in the state.
The NPP, on the other hand, has perpetually dismissed the charges levelled by the BJP of lapses in the implementation of central schemes in the state.
