Shillong, Jan 8: VPP legislator, Adelbert Nongrum has suggested that the old steel bridge at Umiam can be used as an alternative route in view of the ongoing repairing work of Umiam Bridge to ease vehicular movement along the stretch.
Nongrum on Monday asked the state government to employ technical experts from MePGCL to assess the feasibility of the old steel bridge at Umiam passing through the Rapsang Group of Industry, heading towards the exit opposite Jack Well Pump.
Nongrum suggested that the subway can be explored to be used as an alternative route in view of the ongoing repair work of the bridge.
In a letter to Power Minister, Abu Taher Mondal, Nongrum said he had personally inspected the current state of the subway road at Umiam Bridge.
‘It is evident that the existing old steel bridge road associated with Umiam has historically served as a viable alternative,” Nongrum said while urging upon the power minister to intervene to direct the technical experts from MePGCL to evaluate the viability of reinstating this alternate route to re-open and make the route functional if there is feasibility and by maintaining one-way traffic, particularly within this junction, which will be more helpful.

“Furthermore, it is vital to address the accessibility for emergencies, particularly for patients. Ensuring smooth transportation links for those who have to approach the airport and railway station is of utmost importance during this challenging period,” Nongrum said.
‘As a layman, I can observe the practicality of this solution that ultimately depends on the Government’s willingness to act decisively’.
“I strongly hope that the government will consider the matter urgently and take decisive steps to alleviate the general public at large,” he added.
