Guwahati, Jan 9: In one of the highest seizures of drugs in eastern India in terms of market value, a team from the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police and Karimganj police, during a joint operation, seized drugs, worth about Rs 100 crore, at Suprakandi under Nilam Bazar police station in Karimganj district on Tuesday afternoon.
Four persons, including three from Mizoram, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
According to official sources, the contraband substances seized comprised 5.1 kilograms of heroin, 64,000 yaba tablets and four packets were seized during the operation.
The operation team was led by DIG, STF, Parthasarathi Mahanta, and Karimganj superintendent of police, Partha Protim Das.
A vehicle (Maruti S Presso), bearing registration number, MZ 06 A 1422, which was used to ferry the contraband substances, has also been seized.
The arrested persons have been identified as Nur Ahmed (driver of the vehicle) of Patharkandi, Karimganj; and three residents of Thenzawl, Mizoram – Zosangliani; Ramngheaka and Lalchamliana.
“This is one of the highest seizures of drugs in eastern India in terms of market value. The seizure is worth at least Rs 100 crores in the market where prices have gone up due to continuous and effective operations and aggressive action by Assam Police,” an official said.
