SHILLONG, Jan 9: The Opposition Trinamool Congress is clueless about what its high command wants – whether to forge an alliance with the state unit of Congress or contest the two Lok Sabha seats from Meghalaya on its own.
The state leaders of the West Bengal-based party on Tuesday chose to reserve their comment on the disinclination of Congress to field a consensus candidate for the Lok Sabha polls until and unless an official communiqué is received from their high command regarding the matter.
“I have not been contacted. I do not have the official statement from the TMC, so I will not be in a position to comment on that. It is something that has appeared in a section of the press and I have not been told anything officially about this,” state TMC president Charles Pyngrope told The Shillong Times.
“The TMC Meghalaya will discuss the alliance thoroughly once I get the official communiqué on it,” he said.
Asked if there has been any discussion on the Lok Sabha polls with the party’s central leaders, he said: “I have told them to let us know whether we will be fielding our candidate or whether there will be an alliance as a section of the press has reported.”
He added he had no idea when such a communication would be received.
Congress has said it is not keen on any alliance with the TMC for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and that the matter has been discussed with the central Congress leadership.
Congress state president, Vincent Pala had on Monday had asserted that the party did not want to align with the TMC for the upcoming elections.
Pala had stated: “We have made our stand with the central leadership. Besides the AITC seems to only have been a party to contest the elections as they have all fallen silent following the election. We are hopeful that the leadership will understand the sentiments of the people.”
