Games’ Torch Relay reaches Jowai

Jowai, Jan 11: In a fervent display of community spirit and athletic zeal, the Torch relay teams from Shillong arrived in Jowai to mark the commencement of the 5th Meghalaya Games. The warm welcome at the Ummulong Beat House in the West Jaintia Hills District set the stage for an exhilarating journey.
Shri. K Passah, the District Sports Officer, extended a hearty greeting to the Torch and the accompanying teams, embodying the spirit of unity that the games represent. The torchbearer, Marlangki Suting, a prominent footballer, took up the responsibility of carrying the flame with pride, leading the relay until it reached the Ummulong Community Health Centre.
From there, the torch embarked on a symbolic journey through the heart of Jowai, traversing significant locations such as Mihmyntdu Lad College, Moorlong, Ladthadlaboh main road, Marian Hills Higher Secondary School, and culminating at the Ummulong Taxi Stand in Iawmusiang.
The Torchbearers, Deilang wa o Nongpluh (Badminton), Honda-ohi Pappang (Taekwondo), Ferdinand Suchiang (Wushu), Wankishwa Mawlong (Judo), Miss Happiness Phawa (Athletics), and Marso Kyndiat (Athletics), proudly showcased their commitment to the spirit of the games as they took turns carrying the torch through the picturesque locales of Jowai.
A special program was organized at the Ummulong Taxi Stand, Iawmusiang, where the local MLA, Wailadmiki Shylla, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Accompanying him were Deputy Commissioners BS Sohliya, IAS, Superintendent of Police C Syrti, MPS, the District Sports Officers from Nongstoin, East Jaintia Hills, and West Jaintia Hills, creating a formidable presence to support the event.MLA Shylla, in his address, underscored the significance of fitness and sportsmanship, urging the participating athletes to give their best in representing the district. He emphasized the importance of daily practice and discipline, advising them to remain focused on their goals rather than dwelling on setbacks.As the torch relay illuminated the streets of Jowai, it not only symbolized the beginning of the 5th Meghalaya Games but also served as a beacon of inspiration for the athletes, reminding them of the values of unity, discipline, and excellence that the games embody. The community’s enthusiastic participation and the presence of local dignitaries further amplified the sense of pride and anticipation for the upcoming sporting extravaganza.
