SHILLONG, Jan 12: Following the recommendation of the state government, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has de-listed Techno Global University through a public notice on December 27 last year.
The university operates out of the Shillong Polytechnic Campus in the Mawlai area of Shillong.
Techno Global University is one of more than half a dozen private universities that were permitted to open a campus in Meghalaya after the state government passed the requisite legislation in the Assembly. The Techno Global University Act was passed by the legislature in 2008.
The university was established by the Meghalaya State Legislative Act and also received permission from UGC through letter No F.9-12/2009(CPP-I) on April 1, 2009, to start different courses and programmes.
The university featured on the UGC’s list of universities in January 2013 although the Education Department had raised concerns about its non-existence.
Through a letter issued on September 27, 2022, the department recommended the removal of the university’s name from the UGC list.
The UGC stated that the university’s official website displays the following information: “Techno Global University, Shillong, has never started any academic activity since inception. We have never issued any mark sheet, certificate, or degree to any person. We have also never authorized any person or institution to act on behalf of us.” The UGC subsequently decided to remove the university from the official list. “The Techno Global University, Shillong Polytechnic Campus, Mawlai, Shillong, Meghalaya was established by the Government of Meghalaya as a State Private University. Therefore, the name of the university was enlisted in the UGC list of universities in January 2013.
“However, the Education Department, Government of Meghalaya vide its letter No. EDN.136/2008/669 dated September 27, 2022, recommended removing the name of the university from the UGC list of universities since the university was non-existent,” the official notice stated.
