kicks off on Day 2

Shillong, Jan 16: In a dazzling display of dominance, swimmers hailing from the capital city of Shillong, East Khasi Hills, left an indelible mark on the second day of the 5th Meghalaya Games at the Rongkhon Swimming Centre.
Out of a possible 10 gold medals, the Shillong contingent secured a staggering 9, accompanied by an additional 6 silver medals. Astonishingly, all 10 bronze medals also found their way to Shillong (EKH). South West Khasi Hills clinched the lone remaining gold, adding 3 silver medals to their tally.
Women’s Wrestling
The St Mary’s HS School ground witnessed a complete sweep by the district of EKH in the afternoon’s women’s wrestling events. Notably, all medals, including gold and silver, were claimed by the talented athletes of East Khasi Hills.
Taekwondo Poomsae
The Taekwondo (Poomsae) event showcased WGH’s dominance, securing 2 golds, 1 silver, and a bronze in three categories. West Jaintia Hills also shone with a gold, accompanied by 1 silver and bronze. Ribhoi and East Khasi Hills contributed to the medal haul with silver and bronze accolades.
Athletics
In a nail-biting contest, Renaldi Dhar of West Jaintia Hills emerged as the fastest man, defeating Gracewin Ch Marak of South West Garo Hills by a mere 200ths of a second. Angelina Dhar from Shillong claimed victory in the women’s run. The 100-meter dash witnessed intense competition, with a mere half-second gap between the top six participants.
1500 Metre Dash:
In the men’s 1500-meter dash, Ribhoi’s Skhemlang Suba clinched gold, followed by Dabit Dkhar of WJH and Nongstoin’s Banjoplang Wanniang. Shillong’s Glorify Kurbah dominated the women’s 1500-meter run, securing gold, with SWKH’s Daphlin Wahlang and Balasiewdor Pathaw taking silver and bronze, respectively.
High Jump
Ribhoi’s Primus Ronghi soared to gold in the Men’s High Jump, while Rinalgi Ingti and Andrisha Klien of Ribhoi claimed gold and silver in the Women’s High Jump. The field events saw Ribhoi lead with 3 golds, a silver, and a bronze, followed by Shillong with 2 golds and West Jaintia Hills with 1 gold.
Basketball
The basketball court at Don Bosco College Tura witnessed a commanding performance by the women’s team of South West Khasi Hills, securing a resounding 32-2 victory over East Jaintia Hills in the inaugural matches.
Shooting Event
The shooting event kicked off at the 2nd Battalion, Goeragre Tura, featuring 53 participants from 12 districts. The event comprises 13 categories, including short and long-range competitions, showcasing marksmanship skills across various disciplines.
Football
In an exhilarating U18 Girls’ Football clash, Ri Bhoi District triumphed 1-0 over East Jaintia Hills, securing a spot in the upcoming semifinals at the iconic PA Sangma Stadium. The next challenge awaits them against Eastern West Khasi Hills District on January 18.
As the second day of the 5th Meghalaya Games unfolded, the fervor of athletic prowess and sporting excellence painted a vibrant tapestry of competition and camaraderie.
From the exhilarating dives in the swimming pool to the precision of Taekwondo Poomsae, the sheer determination and skill on display showcased the spirit of Meghalaya’s sporting talent.
