Tura, Jan 17: In a compelling story within the realm of Freestyle Wrestling at the ongoing 5th Meghalaya Games, the spotlight shines on Ringchi K Sangma. Hailing from Upper Wadanang in the West Garo Hills District, this 19-year-old student of Govt. Boys Higher Secondary School is creating ripples with her remarkable journey.
Ringchi recently joined the Wrestling Association of WGH, a nascent association boasting a modest 23 athletes and established just a month ago. Prior to her impressive debut in the games, she underwent basic training organized by the Wrestling Association of Meghalaya, with guidance from a senior athlete for a mere six days.
In her inaugural competition on Tuesday, Ringchi emerged victorious, securing a coveted spot in the final bout scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 PM (January 17, 2024), at the Wrestling Venue in St Mary’s Higher Secondary School. Currently assured of a silver position, she remains steadfast in her determination to vie for gold in the eagerly anticipated final.
Ringchi’s success carries historical significance as she stands on the brink of becoming the first wrestling athlete from Garo Hills to clinch a medal at the Meghalaya Games. The inclusion of wrestling as one of the 23 sports disciplines in the 5th Meghalaya Games is a milestone, especially considering the absence of a wrestling state association in Meghalaya prior to September 2022.The 5th Meghalaya Games 2024, with its debut of wrestling as an Olympic sport, has undeniably left an indelible impact, revealing the latent potential of youth in various sports across Meghalaya.”As Ringchi K Sangma’s journey unfolds on the wrestling mat at the 5th Meghalaya Games, it symbolizes more than just individual triumph.
