Shillong, Jan 23: In a significant moment for Wahiajer Village, the Wahiajer Multi Sports Complex was inaugurated on January 23, 2024, marking a significant leap forward in the region’s sporting infrastructure.
This sports complex, a three-phase project with a total investment of Rs. 64.40 crores is a testament to the government’s commitment to fostering sports and youth development in the region. Phase-I, with a project cost of Rs. 24.97 crores, Phase-II, with a project cost of Rs. 14.82 crores, and Rs. 24.61 crores collectively represent a substantial investment in elevating sporting facilities in the area.
The Wahiajer Multi Sports Complex boasts several key features, including a standard artificial football turf that promises an exceptional playing experience.
Complementing this is a 400m synthetic athletic track catering to track and field athletes, ensuring a comprehensive sporting experience for all disciplines.
Renowned singer Gracyl Ropmay also performed before the final match at the stadium where over thousands of spectators were present at the Sniawbhalang Football Tournament.Further enhancing the complex’s functionality is a state-of-the-art facility block, complete with dressing rooms, a dining hall, a press conference area, and VIP facilities.
The addition of a spectator gallery with a seating capacity of 5000 creates a vibrant atmosphere for fans and supporters to cheer on their favorite teams.
To ensure the comfort and convenience of attendees, the complex features separate toilet blocks for VIPs and the public.
Additionally, a periphery road facilitates easy accessibility, while a retaining wall and land development measures contribute to the sustainability and aesthetics of the entire complex.
The Wahiajer Multi Sports Complex stands as a symbol of the government’s dedication to providing world-class sporting facilities that not only nurture the talents of aspiring athletes but also contribute to the overall development of the community and the state.
In his speech, the Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma said, “It is a historic moment for us to witness the inauguration of the Wahiajer Multi Sports Complex. It gives me a great sense of satisfaction that the vision and dream of the Deputy Chief Minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar has turned into reality.
He further said that initiatives like the STAR Program, Athlete/Coach incentives (cash awards and scholarships) and tie-ups with experts and National Association underscores the government’s dedication to creating a strong ecosystem for athletes across Meghalaya.
