SHILLONG, Jan 24: A delegation from Meghalaya, headed by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, will visit Dhaka to inaugurate the life-size statue and bust of Khasi freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) on February 16.
According to Arts and Culture Minister Paul Lyngdoh, the state government was in continuous communication with the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh to ensure that the state government’s proposal to house a life-size statue and bust of the Khasi freedom fighter in the Indian Embassy in Dhaka materialised.
He explained that after a few PowerPoint presentations with the images and department approval, renowned artist Raphael Warjri designed the life-size statue and the bust.
Prior to this, Lyngdoh had announced that U Tirot Sing’s detention letter and documents from the British Library would be on display in a room that will be named in his honour.
“There will also be a display of major arts and crafts from the state,” he continued, while terming it a significant achievement of the current dispensation.
“With this, U Tirot Sing is no longer a prominent figure in Meghalaya but we managed to make him a global figure,” Lyngdoh said, expressing happiness that this initiative to honour the Khasi freedom fighter materialised during his tenure as the minister.
