Shillong, Feb 3: Shillong Lajong FC faced a 1-0 defeat against Inter Kashi in the resumption of the I-League 2023-24 at First Ground, Polo, on Saturday.
This defeat marks Lajong’s fourth consecutive loss, considering their previous three defeats in the Super Cup.
The match not only marked the return of the I-League after a hiatus but also witnessed the inaugural clash between the two clubs at this venue, illuminated by the new floodlights.
Despite dominating possession, registering more attempts on goal, and earning more corners, the hosts failed to capitalize on these advantages.
The turning point came in the 23rd minute when Julen Perez Del Pino showcased his playmaking prowess, providing a lobbed ball over the Lajong defense for Gianni Miguel Dos Santos.
The Dutch forward adeptly maneuvered past his marker, Ronney Kharbudon, to execute a well-timed right-footed volley, finding the back of the net.
Lajong goalkeeper Neithovilie Chalieu faced a formidable challenge, unable to thwart Dos Santos’ precision. Meanwhile, the visitors’ seasoned goalkeeper, Arindam Bhattacharya, thwarted Figo Syndai twice during the match.
Lajong’s stroke of misfortune struck in the second half when a powerful attempt by the new signing, Marcos Genar Silva, met the crossbar.
While a victory could have elevated SLFC to the second spot in the standings, they find themselves in fifth place with 19 points.
Inter Kashi, on the other hand, catapulted from the ninth to the sixth position with 18 points.
Both teams now hold the distinction of having played more matches than any other contenders.Looking ahead, Shillong Lajong FC is slated to face Gokulam Kerala on 12th February in their upcoming fixture.
In the wake of this disappointing loss, Shillong Lajong FC faces the challenge of regrouping and strategizing for their upcoming encounters.
With the determination to bounce back, the team remains steadfast in their pursuit of success, aiming to turn the tides in their favor. As the I-League unfolds, the journey for Lajong continues, filled with both trials and opportunities for redemption on the football field. The match against Inter Kashi serves as a poignant reminder for Shillong Lajong FC to analyze their strengths and weaknesses, refining their gameplay for future contests.
