SHILLONG, Feb 4: Cabinet minister and NPP candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat, Ampareen Lyngdoh on Sunday said her decision to contest the parliamentary election is within the constitutional framework.
She was reacting to Regional Democratic Alliance candidate Robertjune Kharjahrin’s observation that a by-poll for the East Shillong Assembly seat could be expensive for Meghalaya.
Lyngdoh represents the East Shillong seat.
“I am not doing something that is out of practice. There is a provision for me to contest,” she said, adding that Kharjahrin was entitled to his views.
“Any additional expenditure will be justified if I am elected to the Lok Sabha. You have seen central ministers participating in Assembly elections and state ministers participating in parliamentary polls,” Lyngdoh said.
She said she has been receiving “overwhelming support” from the people during her visits to various parts of the Shillong constituency. “I am grateful that the people of Shillong constituency know my name,” she added.
