Shillong, Feb 25: The 2nd Shortimai Knockout Football Tournament witnessed intense action as Mihpli United and Umphrup SC emerged victorious in their Round of 16 clashes, securing their spots in the quarterfinals. The matches, held in Smit on Saturday, showcased thrilling displays of skill and determination.
Mihpli United demonstrated their dominance on the field with a commanding 3-0 victory over YBSC Shella. Ebormi Mukhim showcased his scoring prowess with a brilliant brace, finding the net in the 5th and 34th minutes, while Iaisuklang Kharsati contributed another goal in the 15th minute, sealing Mihpli United’s triumph.
In a closely contested encounter, Mylliem Lum SC initially took the lead against Umphrup SC when Shaitbor Kharkrang scored in the 32nd minute.
However, the momentum shifted when Mylliem Lum SC’s goalkeeper was red-carded for handling the ball outside the box, reducing the team to 10 men.
Umphrup SC capitalized on the opportunity, equalizing through Freddy Kharbyngar in the 42nd minute, forcing the game into a tense deadlock at 1-1 at the end of regulation time. The outcome was ultimately determined by a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, which saw Umphrup SC emerge triumphant with a 5-4 victory.
The upcoming matches scheduled for February 28 promise more excitement for football enthusiasts. Lumkynsai FC is set to clash with Sohtun Thynroit at 11 AM, followed by a showdown between Laitkyrhong SC and Synroplang of Laitkor at 2 PM. Fans eagerly anticipate the thrilling encounters that lie ahead as the tournament progresses.
