Party to focus on its strength during LS poll campaign

SHILLONG, March 3: The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Sunday said it will focus on its strength during upcoming Lok Sabha election campaign instead of engaging itself in political duels with rival parties.
UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh said normally, political parties, candidates and different groups point their finger at one another during election campaign but the UDP is trying to be as objective as possible this time and articulate issues and concerns of the people and the state.
“We are talking about issues which we feel are concrete and need to be addressed. It is not just about campaigning for the sake of it,” he said.
“How will it help the state if we continuously engage in verbal duels? The nature of politics is like that only but we must understand the issues and concerns of people and address them,” Mawthoh said, adding that “verbal duels will tickle the minds of those who like to listen to all those petty talks but we have to get into the real issues which is important.”
Observing that politics has stooped very low, he said the UDP is emphasising that it will campaign on its strength and not harp on the weaknesses of other parties.
Talking about the UDP’s strength, he said it is a grand old regional party which has made efforts to unify the regional parties and align the mindset of people with a shared objective and vision.
“Our candidate is doing very well and we hope that he connects well with the people with experience as a youth leader and legal background. He is a better candidate from our observation,” Mawthoh said.
The UDP has fielded former HYC president Robert June Kharjahrin in the Shillong seat.
