Shillong, March 5: In a significant virtual gathering on Tuesday, the Presidents and Secretaries of the State Olympic Associations from the Eight North East States convened to deliberate on preparations for the upcoming 3rd North East Games 2024. Scheduled to take place in Nagaland from March 18 to 23, 2024, the event is set to host 16 sports disciplines.Among the key decisions reached during the meeting was the renaming of the erstwhile North East Olympic Association to “North East Sports Association.”
Furthermore, it was decided that the North East Olympic Games would now be referred to as the “North East Games.”This decision was prompted by recent advisories from the Indian Olympic Association, dated February 28th, 2024, and March 5th, 2024, along with directives from the International Olympic Committee issued on March 31st, 2022.
These communications emphasized the protection of the term “Olympic” and its associated logo, which are copyrighted and registered trademarks safeguarded under the Olympic Charter and International Olympic Committee guidelines.
As a result, all materials, merchandise, branding, and publicity related to the North East Games will henceforth utilize the new nomenclatures. However, due to constraints of time and resources, previously manufactured and produced items will remain unchanged.
The meeting, presided over by Abu Metha, Working President of the North East Sports Association and Secretary General of the Nagaland Olympic Association, saw the participation of Presidents, Secretaries, and representatives from Arunachal, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim. Unfortunately, Tripura was unable to attend the session.
