SHILLONG, March 10: The three-day budget session of the KHADC will begin from Monday with the opposition parties gearing up to corner the NPP-led Executive Committee (EC) with a host of issues ranging from the powers of the EC to make laws under the Sixth Schedule, the questionable style and functioning of the council’s Arts and Culture department and the status of developmental schemes implemented by the council in border areas.
Leader of Opposition Titosstarwell Chyne on Sunday said they will take up a crucial matter related to the role of the KHADC with regard to central and private institutions within the jurisdiction of the council.
KHADC CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem will present the budget on Monday.
Syiem said the council had to advance the budget session, which was originally scheduled from March 19-21, since they were worried that they might not be able to pass the full budget if the Election Commission of India (ECI) announces the Lok Sabha election schedule and the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) comes into force.
Syiem, meanwhile, made it clear that the council will oppose any move of the Centre for mining or exploration of uranium in areas within its jurisdiction. “We will not compromise on the uranium mining issue since it may lead to health concerns in Domiasiat,” he said.
