SHILLONG, March 10: Tibetans in Shillong, on Sunday, observed the 65th anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan Uprising, which was brutally crushed by Chinese forces, with the territory continuing to be occupied decades later by China.
After gathering at the monastery in Upper Lumparing, they walked to Jhalupara via Laban, Civil Hospital, IGP, Police Bazar, GS Road, Iewduh and Lumdiengjri traffic point.
Through the event, the community paid homage to around 1,000 Tibetans who were detained by the Chinese government for peacefully protesting against a hydroelectric project.
A prayer session was also held in the morning to honour the lives of those who have died for the cause of Tibetan freedom from Chinese oppression.
