18 Hindu refugees from Pak get Indian citizenship
AHMEDABAD, March 17: Eighteen Hindu refugees from Pakistan residing in Ahmedabad have been granted Indian citizenship during a camp attended by Gujarat minister of state for home Harsh Sanghavi.At the camp organised at the district collector’s office on Saturday, Sanghavi conferred Indian citizenship to the 18 persons and urged them to work together to realise the dream of a new India.“It is expected that all of you will be determined to participate in the development journey of the country,” he said, adding the central and state governments were committed to bringing all those who have obtained Indian citizenship to the society’s mainstream.Gazette notifications of 2016 and 2018 empower the district collectors of Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Kutch in Gujarat to grant Indian citizenship to people of minority communities from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, said an official release.With this, a total of 1,167 Hindu refugees from Pakistan residing in Ahmedabad district have so far been granted Indian citizenship, it said. Gangster opens fire at raiding police team, constable killed
CHANDIGARH, March 17: A constable, Amritpal Singh, was shot dead by a gangster on Sunday when the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) team was raiding his house in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district.Acting on a tip-off, the CIA team of the Punjab Police raided the house in Mukerian’s Mansoorpur village where the gangster stored a huge cache of illegal firearms.Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Surendra Lamba told the media that the CIA team was in the village to raid the residence of Sukhwinder Singh.As the team was entering the house, the suspect opened fire and constable Amritpal Singh was hit by a bullet in the chest, he said.However, the gangster managed to flee the scene, he said.Amritpal Singh was initially admitted to the Civil Hospital in Mukerian and from there he was referred to a private hospital where he died, the SSP added.
