SHILLONG, March 18: The Trinamool Congress on Monday said it is not fielding any candidate for the Shillong parliamentary seat although it has put up a candidate against INDIA bloc partner Congress in the Tura constituency.
TMC Meghalaya president, Charles Pyngrope said his party decided against contesting the Shillong seat as its vote share in the 2023 Assembly election was not encouraging.
Sources said the TMC has decided to support NPP candidate Ampareen Lyngdoh in Shillong and not Congress candidate Vincent H. Pala, who is seeking re-election.
Pyngrope confirmed that the Nongthymmai block TMC is supporting the NPP candidate but said he has nothing to do with the decision at a local level.
Asked why the TMC is not supporting Congress in the Shillong seat, Pyngrope said Congress did not seek support from the Nongthymmai block of his party.
He defended the TMC’s decision to contest the Tura constituency. “We are contesting the seat because our vote share in Tura was on the higher side,” he said.
