City event talks opportunities & challenges in agri sector

SHILLONG, March 20: Deliberations over numerous opportunities and challenges relating to the agricultural sector, along with various government schemes, were extensively covered during the two-day Farmers’ Market Event at Anton Hall, Laitumkhrah, Shillong.
Organised by the School of Economics, Commerce, and Management, MLCU and 1917iTEAMS, the event brought together stakeholders from academia, government and farmers to discuss crucial issues in the agricultural sector.
The event also brought to the fore the importance of the agricultural sector in income and employment generation for the youths.
Secretary of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare department, Isawanda Laloo, who was the chief guest on the occasion, highlighted the importance of integrating modern technology into agriculture while staying rooted to tradition.
She also emphasised the need for low-volume high-value products due to certain limitations in Meghalaya.
Stressing the need to preserve agricultural heritage, Laloo spoke about the importance of technology, especially information technology, on the capability expansion of the farmers and access to markets.
It may be mentioned that students from different colleges and universities had also participated in the event.
