45 hours after abduction, construction worker rescued by SGH police

Baghmara, Mar 22: In a show of great police work involving at least 3 police stations of South Garo Hills (SGH), construction worker, Akhilesh Chauhan, who was kidnapped by criminals from just outside their camp in Rongdik near Karukol, was rescued following a 45 hour long search and rescue operation.

Not only was Chauhan rescued from his abductors, the police also arrested two members of the gang that was behind his kidnapping.

On mar 20, at about 1:40 AM, Chauhan was abducted by the group who came knocking on the doors of the camp on the pretense of seeking diesel. When the manager of the firm asked Chauhan to look into the matter, he was waylaid by the group and abducted. Police have identified 2 further accomplices of the group and a search for the others is currently on.

The two arrested in the case have been identified as Wilban M Sangma (30) of the village of Durabanda Songgital, SGH and Withmil S Marak (29) of the village of Upper Dosgre, Mindikgre, SGH.

“The accused had two more accomplices who were at a different location to make ransom calls following the kidnapping. We are on the lookout for these two. A case under relevant sections has been registered at the Siju PS,” informed superintendent of police, SGH, Shailendra Bamaniya.

The victim was employed with the firm that has been contracted to the construction of roads and bridges in the district and is said to be safe.
