Maxwelton Estate case

SHILLONG, March 21: The High Court of Meghalaya on Thursday directed the state government to ensure that no further untoward activities occur the Maxwelton Estate in the city.
The court also directed the state government to file a status report indicating the exact situation of the land at the Estate as on date, as to whether pursuant to the acquisition proceedings the same vests with the state, or is still with the private parties.
During the hearing of the matter, an affidavit was filed by the petitioners bringing on record subsequent developments in the instant matter, wherein it has been alleged that an NGO has constructed a structure, and that incidents of intimidations are occurring, for which the residents of the area are living in fear.
The court directed the government advocate to obtain necessary instructions, in view of the fact that the court had passed orders earlier that any untoward incident were to be prevented, while the matter was pending.
Government Advocate S. Bhattacharjee submitted that she has received instructions and prayed that she may be allowed to file the same by way of an affidavit.
