‘The UDP, HSPDP should join hands and support the VPP if they really represent the sentiments of the regional forces’

SHILLONG, March 25: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Monday urged the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) to opt out of the Lok Sabha poll race and instead, support its candidate Ricky AJ Syngkon in the Shillong seat.
Addressing an election rally at Mawkriah, VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said RDA constituents United Democratic Party (UDP) and Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) must have witnessed the massive turnout of people at the VPP rallies.
He claimed that the people of Shillong parliamentary seat have already made up their mind to vote for the VPP candidate.
“The two parties should join hands and support the VPP if they really represent the sentiments of the regional forces. If the RDA decides to contest, then it will only prove that they are the forces which are working for both BJP and NPP (National People’s Party),” Basaiawmoit said.
He mentioned that UDP, HSPDP and BJP have been the components of the NPP-led MDA government for the past six years.
The VPP chief said these parties cannot mislead the people anymore as they have been complicit in all alleged wrongdoings of the government.
Speaking in another rally at Langtor in Mairang, Basaiawmoit said the failure of the Congress has allowed the BJP to rule the country.
He said people can no longer trust the Congress, citing that the Congress is working together with the NPP in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council but is in the Opposition in the state Assembly. He questioned the party on its two divergent stands.
Urging people to repose their faith in the VPP “which represents the sentiments of the people”, Basaiawmoit said the regional parties are leading in many states and the people need to replicate this in Meghalaya.
The VPP’s Shillong candidate also spoke at the two rallies.
