NSS volunteers, NCC cadets clean Umkhen river

SHILLONG, March 26: As many as 90-plus volunteers comprising NSS Unit of St. Mary’s College and NCC cadets of Madan Hindi Pathshala Secondary School took upon themselves to clean the Umken river during a one-week NSS Special Camp, which culminated on March 24.
According to a statement, the cleaning drive, initiated by the students in and around one stretch of the river, was also supported by Madanrting Dorbar Shnong and Assam Regiment Centre.
Organised at the Madan Hindi Pathshala Secondary School, Madanrting by the NSS unit of St. Mary’s College, the camp was thematised on ‘Youth for Mission Life: Environmental Goal for Vikshit Bharat’, which aimed at developing basic life skill with  community service, social activities including environmental awareness and conservation.
“Highlight of the camp and its probable outcome can be gauged from the various programmes and activities that were tailored to bring best of the special camp; where trekking, campus cleaning, cleaning of the river Umkhen, stakeholders’ interaction and networking programme, orientation for the school students, basic life skill for the volunteers were designed during the stay,” the statement said.
The camp concluded with the felicitation of the volunteers for successfully completing the special camp.
