TURA, March 28: One of the founding members of the Nazareth Hospitals in the state, Sister Rosario Lopez Herreira (MCJ) breathed her last in the same hospital which she co-founded, earlier this afternoon at about 12:40 pm.
A funeral prayer service has been arranged at 10 am on Saturday at the St. Xavier’s Chapel in Tura, West Garo Hills.
Sister Rosario was born on November 24, 1930, in Granada, Spain, and came to India as a nurse in 1954. She was one of the founding members of Nazareth Hospital.
Sister Rosario came to Garo Hills in 1970 where she founded the Bethany Society in 1981. She continued work in Garo Hills since then and was instrumental in the conduction of various eye camps to restore eyesight for the visually impaired.
She was also responsible for the birth of over 1000 babies in villages where she worked as a mid-wife and her contributions to these areas have not only been acknowledged but immense.
Sister Rosaria is the recipient of many national and international awards, while also being fluent in both Khasi and Garo languages.
She wished to be buried in the village of Tebrongre where her unfinished dream of an old age home still remains. Construction of the old-age home is currently under way.
