BSF, police prevent sugar smuggling bid

TURA, April 3: The BSF along with the Meghalaya Police have managed to foil a bid to smuggle sugar to Bangladesh leading to the seizure of over 70,000 kg of the essential commodity as well as the arrest of 3 Indian nationals.
The incident took place on Tuesday near Gasuapara in South Garo Hills where three vehicles were intercepted by a team of police and the 181st Battalion BSF during a joint operation.
Based on specific information, BSF troops along with Meghalaya police planned a special operation and laid a Mobile check post (MCP) near Gasuapara and intercepted the vehicles loaded with more than 70,000 kg of sugar.
Upon questioning, all the three drivers failed to produce valid documents about the consignment of Sugar.
The illegal consignment was immediately seized and handed over along with the arrested persons, to the Gasuapara police station for further legal action.
It may be mentioned that in the first quarter of current year, vigilant troops of BSF have seized approximately 1188 tons of Sugar, which was intended to be smuggled into Bangladesh through the International border of Meghalaya.
