SHILLONG, April 9: KHADC Chief Executive Member Pyniaid Sing Syiem has decided to drag VPP supremo Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit to the High Court of Meghalaya over his remarks that the former was “forcefully installed” by the NPP-led MDA Government to the post of the CEM which is in contempt of the High Court of Meghalaya ruling of 2020.
Syiem said that the High Court had referred to Section 20 of the Assam Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Councils) Rules, 1951 which states that Chief Executive Member shall be elected by the District Council and the other Executive Members shall be appointed by the Governor on the advice of the Chief Executive Member from amongst the members of the District Council.
According to Syiem, the CEM is indirectly elected by the people since the MDCs are elected representatives of the people.
The KHADC CEM lamented that the VPP chief, who is a three-time MLA and also was an MDC for a single term, is not aware about the provisions of the law.
“It is misleading to say that I have been forcefully installed by the MDA Government,” Syiem said.
Syiem also dared Ardent to lodge a complaint against him before the Election Commission of India (ECI) for accusing VPP supporters of trying to disrupt the election meetings of the NPP.
“The complaint will not hold any water since we have video evidence of how the VPP supporters tried to disrupt the NPP meetings at Umsning, Mairang, Jaiaw and Rynjah,” he claimed.
He mentioned that VPP supporters made attempts to disrupt an RDA meeting at Mairang on Monday.
