SHILLONG, April 20: Member of the VPP’s State Executive Committee (SEC), Avner Medon Pariat, was on Saturday expelled from the party for allegedly damaging the party’s image.
In a letter addressed to Pariat, VPP disciplinary committee chairman, Kara H Chen, said the party has taken serious note of his recent statements against the VPP and in favour of another political party on social media platform, which is “unbecoming of an SEC member.”
The letter further stated that Pariat’s actions have undermined their efforts to strengthen the party. “This act of indiscipline on your part has left us with no option but to expel you from the party with immediate effect,” Chen said.
But Pariat has made observations of his own, citing resentment against the party.
In a “letter of resignation”, Pariat said he has become “increasingly disillusioned by the direction the party has taken”.
“The party’s shift towards religious fanaticism has been particularly troubling for me,” Pariat said, while adding that he will retire for the time being from state electoral politics, which has become “divisive and cruel”.
“I was known for being an independent critic and I will return to this role as I feel it is the best fit for me as I endeavour to expand the minds and ideas of the people. I will not join any other political party in the immediate future so my silence about party meetings and discussions is guaranteed,” he said
He thanked the party for the opportunities and experiences. “I have met many wonderful people and learned a great deal, and for that, I will always be grateful,” Pariat remarked.
