SHILLONG, April 26: Besieged with rising instances of law-and-order problems, the East Khasi Hills district administration is contemplating to involve community leaders and traditional institutions to ensure peace and also to secure information on cases of crimes.
The law-and-order situation in Shillong seems to be on a downward slide after KSU issued a warning that there will be problems if police continue to arrest its members in connection with the recent murder cases in Ichamati and Mawlai Mawroh.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, SC Sadhu on Friday said they are identifying vulnerable areas and they would hold engagements with the community leaders and traditional institutions so that they can reach out to the public, besides getting necessary information to ensure peace and tranquility in the city. The administration is planning to hold a meeting with the stakeholders next week.
Pointing out that they are not thinking of bringing in additional forces, he added that the existing force will be strategically placed in areas with higher threat perception.
Earlier this month, a police vehicle was torched inside the Mawlai police station premises. The incident came soon after the arrest of two KSU activists in connection with the twin-murder case at Ichamati on March 27.
Recently, two more KSU members were arrested in connection with the Ichamati case and the Mawroh murder case. Hours later, miscreants hurled a petrol bomb (a burning rag according to police) targeting an escort vehicle of the NEEPCO Director (Personnel) Maj Gen (retired) RK Jha.
In the latest incident, a petrol bomb was hurled at the Nongmensong residence of Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Friday.
